Structure and Functions
The department carries its work through a number of sections with functions assigned to them:

  1. Physiology section
  2. Biochemistry section
  3. Psychology section
  4. Physical Education section
  5. Neuro-Psychology Section

Scientific Research Department is a very well equipped laboratory having various sections viz.,
Biochemistry, Physiology, Radiology, Psychology, and Physical Education, for carrying out fundamental and applied research works in yoga.

    Physiology section

At present the section possesses instruments like Kymograph, Peak flow
meter, ECG machine, BP apparatus, eight channel Polygraph and Pulse
Oxymeter. Recently, the section has designed and prepared a unique Nostril
Apparatus for the research works on nostril dominance. Apart from the usual
cardio- pulmonary studies on various Yoga practices, the parameters which
are studied in this section are-

EEG - Electro encephalogram (Electrical activity of brain).

ECG - Electro cardiogram (Electrical activity of heart).

EMG - Electro myogram (Electrical activity of muscles).

    GSR - Galvanic Skin Resistance.

PTG - Plethysmography (Finger pulse volume).

    TEMP - Temperature.

PEFR - Peak expiratory Flow Rate (expiratory efficiency of the lungs).

    BP - Blood Pressure.

    SpO
    2 - O2 saturation in blood.

Biochemistry section

The Section is equipped with spectrophotometer, calori-meter, and single pan digital balance, pH meter, digital glucometer, deep freezer and other routine clinical and pathological apparata. The investigations that can be carried out are routine Urine examination, Hemoglobin and differential count, Total red blood cell count, Malarial parasite, Erythrocyte sedimentation rate, lipid profiles, liver as well as kidney functions, blood sugar etc. This section is capable of conducting all the related investigations with greater accuracy.

Physical Education section

The section has got various equipments viz. Bicycle-ergometer, Skinfold caliper, Goniometer, grip dynamometer, Flexomeasure, Hardvard steps, Kraus Weber, AAHPERD and Fleishman Batteries, Heart watch, Muscle tonometer, tread mill etc. The various parameters which are measured on these equipments are flexibility, cardio - vascular endurance, balance, grip strength, body fat percentage and density, minimum muscular fitness and physical fitness index, stress, health related fitness etc.

Neuro-Psychology Section
(Under future expansion programme)

An instrument named Perceptron has been designed and built by the section in order to understand the effect of yoga practices on the basis of principles of neuropsychology like human information processing and signal detection theory.
It is proposed to acquire computerized brain tomography for topographical mapping of evoked electrical potentials of the brain. This instrument will record the event related potentials and also Fast Fourier Transform mapping (FFTmapping) during yoga practices.
