PHILOSOPHICO-LITERARY RESEARCH IN YOGA

ANALYTICAL WORK :
Analytical work endeavors to analyze the yogic concepts, practices, their meaning and thus to elucidate and interpret the core concepts that comprise and give meaning to the system of yoga consisting of its methodology, metaphysics, epistemology, and psycho-physiological therapeutics and so on. With such a view in mind, the department has worked on projects classified as under:

CONCEPTUAL – METHODOLOGICAL: Yoga being a specialized subject, containing yogic concepts and methods, presented in highly technical vocabulary, requires to be studied analytically in order to make it available in ready reckoner form to the Yoga Researchers, Sadhakas, Students and common man. For this purpose the Department has at its credit the following works:

A. ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF YOGA (IN THE MAKING) : The gigantic and prestigious project of preparing Yogic Encyclopaedia with a view to provide exhaustive information about various yogic terms, concepts, practices / techniques at one place was taken up by the Department. . The collected material was thought to be published in the form of various volumes of Yoga kosha, which will serve a material towards the final compilation of Yogic Encyclopaedia. Thus the following work i.e. Yoga Kosha can be viewed as Yogic Encyclopaedia in the making.

a. YOGA KOSHA: Unlike the usual Dictionaries, the present Yoga Kosha endeavors to give a comprehensive understanding of various Yogic terms concepts, practices in accordance with their reference to context wherever they have appeared. In this way this Yoga Kosha (Enlarged Edition,1990)serves the purpose of compilation of Yogic Encyclopaedia.

B. YOGA CONCORDANCE: This is expected to be a comprehensive source of all yogic concepts which would serve as an adequate tool for Researchers, historians of yoga, exponent of yoga and yogic texts. In this work, yogic terms / concepts are included with relevant quotations available in 72 Yogic Texts. Work is in progress.

C. MONOGRAPHS: This work consists of detailed analytical presentationof one particular concept / practice available in various yogic texts. In this context the Monographs on Ujjayi, Kapalabhati and Asanas are ready with us.

COMPARATIVE STUDIES (Proposed): It is often claimed that yoga is a form of Universal Spirituality because of its Secular nature . A man of any creed or belief may practise yoga for the realization of the Summum bonum of even one's own faith . This claim has not so far been systematically scrutinized , studied and justified. For this purpose various Indian and Non Indian Spiritual Forms just as Jainism , Buddhism , Christianity , Judaism , Taoism , Zoroastrianism , Islam , Sufism etc. need to be compared with Yogic Spirituality.

Further, in our contemporary times, we come across Spiritual personalities like J.Krishnamurti, Aurobindo and others, and such trends as Transcendental Meditation, Osho Meditation etc. which consist of penetrating insights and innovations in the field of yoga. The study of these in the light of Classical Yoga will be of paramount significance in bringing forth the Universal and secular form of Yogic Spirituality.
