With the goal of restructuring the society on spiritual values, through revival of ancient Yogic discipline, Swami Kuvalayananda established the Kaivalyadhama Yoga institute on the Vijayadashami Day 1924, at Lonavla. Simultaneously he started publishing the journal 'Yoga-Mimamsa' to present the results of scientific work which he had undertaken to unravel the mysteries of Yoga. He soon gathered around him a team of talented workers devoted to Yoga. As the work expanded, a new off-shoot came into existence in the form of 'Shriman Madhav Yoga Mandir Samiti' to look after the research activity in its practical as well as the textual aspect of Yoga. As the fame of the institute spread throughout the world, a large number of young enthusiasts started learning Yoga at the Ashram. To train them properly in the Yogic physical culture, the 'Gordhandas Seksaria College of Yoga & Cultural Synthesis' was opened in 1950. Alongwith the spiritual and physical culturists a number of patients suffering from various psychosomatic diseases started coming to Kaivalyadhama. For them the 'Rugna Seva Manidr' was created to look after the therapeutic work. Out of this grew the 'Shrimati Amolak Devi Tirathram Gupta Yogic Hospital', a first ever hospital of this kind in India, devoted exclusively to the treatment of chronic functional disorders through Yoga, in 1961. As the demand arose from other places to spread the activity of this kind, now branches are started in Bombay, Rajkot, Delhi and Bhopal, USA & France. His excellent work in the field of Yogic Culture attracted the attention of the national leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. It is no exaggeration to say that scientific Yoga is the single largest contribution of Swami Kuvalayananda and that Kaivalyadhama is the embodiment of that pursuit. When Swamiji set about in his quest after perfection, he was conscious of the fact that it was not easy to attain. Nobody claims that perfection has been attained in Kaivalyadhama, but no one can decry it either as a house of imperfection. The 75 long years of its existence has been a great landmark in its own way in the field of Indian culture and that is saying a lot about the institution. |
